Starting Archery Training In Schools

Why archery in schools?

  1. SERVICE TO NATION:

Archery is an Olympic sport. It is important that schools introduce Olympic sports to children early in their schooling so that our country can look forward to a rich haul in future Olympic events. It is a great contribution to the service of the nation if we can introduce the Olympic sport of Archery, nurture talent and excel in the sports. The HU Archery Mission is the pioneer and leader of the modern archery movement in Tamilnadu and has a clear practical road map to take it’s archers to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

  2. OUR CULTURAL HERITAGE:

Archery is an ancient art that is enmeshed with the cultural and historical heritage of India. The greatest of Kings and rulers as well as mythological figures of India were great archers. Archery has for centuries been identified as a royal art. Great archers became rulers and in turn great rulers were excellent in archery. In the contemporary context, it is relevant that training in archery in early education hones the capabilities of children to achieve their targets in life and become leaders in their own chosen field.

  3. A GREAT MIND DEVICE:

More than anything else, Archery and shooting at the target is the greatest mental device to enhance the art of focusing, concentration, excelling in studies and the pursuit of knowledge. The practitioner is able to have a clarity of vision, distinct visual destination, is able to proceed in life with arrow like precision, reach targets with accuracy and tune the mind and soul towards excellence, supreme leadership, habitual all round winning and create unprecedented targets to reach and unthinkable ultimate achievements for accomplishment.

  4. QUOTAS IN HIGHER EDUCATION & CAREER OPPURTUNITIES:

The state government as well as the central government is promoting and encouraging Olympic sports in a very big way. For archers who have participated with distinction and won medals in state, national and international events in archery, there is a separate sports quota while applying to professional courses in college and there is a separate sports quota when one applies for a job in state or central government departments.

INTRODUCTION, TRAINING AND PRACTISE OF ARCHERY IN SCHOOLS

Methodology of the training:

All archery training by HU Archery Mission (which is affliated to The Archery Association of Tamilnadu (TAAT) which in turn is affiliated to Archery Association of India (AAI) which in turn is affiliated to World Archery (WA) federation) in schools will be as follows.

The training will be given by
1) the GurHu / Chief State Coach - HU
2) the Center Training Co-ordinator (CTC) and
3) Parent-Coach Volunteers (PCV)

Unlike other games, preliminary training direct from the GurHu is extremely important to sync the Archers to the basic concepts, science and philosophy of Archery. Also according to the rules of The Archery Association of Tamilnadu (TAAT), only a World Archery (WA) certified coach must handle the training workshops. As it is an individual game where several parameters need to be observed, a parent coach behind the archer is extremely necessary to continuously assess the parameters and in feeding info to the Archer thru a telescope during training as well as during matches and tournaments.

The Center Training Co-ordinator (CTC) will over see practice problems and act as a bridge between archers and the guru as well as co-ordinate the entire training sessions.

The GurHu/Chief State Coach – HU will begin the training with an exhaustive workshop for the ‘Freshers level’. He will also come for one supervision before the certification exam and finally for the certification. HU is a living legend in martial arts and is known as the Godfather of modern Archery in Tamilnadu and was singularly responsible for introducing modern Archery in 17 districts in Tamilnadu since 1979. Trained by the leading experts of the Archery world Mr Pascal Colmaire, Mr Kim Sun Bin & Mr Bill Wee and he is one of the only three, level 3 Archery coaches in India with certification from World Archery. HU has trained many international champions in Archery.

The Centre Training Co-ordinator (CTC) will be responsible for supervising the regular periodic training in the school or center.

The Parent–Coach Volunteers (PCV) will help during the entire period of training in closely monitoring the children’s training.

  1. INTRODUCTION:

Archery being a new art, an explanatory session is extremely important.

A meeting will be organized with maximum participation of all those who are interested or have prospects in getting interested in Archery.

A motivation lecture will be given by the GurHu and a detailed introduction of Archery and it’s practice will be explained. There will be a question and answer session by prospective archers and the GurHu will handle the session and all doubts about Archery will be clarified and explained at length.

List of students interested in Archery and parents who are prepared to volunteer as Parent-Coaches will be taken.

  2. INITIATION:

The students who have confirmed to join Archery will be traditionally initiated into Archery in a non religious ritual by symbolically paying respects to the GurHu with flowers and fruits. The Archers will then attend a Guru-Shisya meditation ceremony where the minds of the Archers will be tuned into learning Archery. The Parent-Coach Volunteers will be encouraged to attend this initiation.

  3. TRAINING WORKSHOP:

The 8 hour workshop in 2 or 4 sessions will be conducted by the Director of HU Archery Mission, Mr HU - theGurHu.

In this 8 hour workshop, the Archers will receive complete and comprehensive training on how to use the bow and arrows. There will be sessions on warm up exercises, stretches, power workouts, stamina exercises & terra band workouts. Every aspect of the level 1 will be dealt with. It will be a great opportunity for students to train directly with the legendary teacher.

  4. REGULAR PRACTISE:

After the training workshop is over, the Center Training Co-ordinator will be responsible in guiding the Archers, and Parent-Coaches to conduct periodic sessions in the School. The CTC will solve technical problems and will refer cases that need attention to the GurHu.

The Parent-Coaches will stand behind the Archers and personally prompt directions to the individual archers and oversee safety and precautionary measures.

Levels of Training:

There are 8 levels of training in Archery based on the skills learnt, knowledge acquired, kind of bow used and distance shot with accuracy.

Level 1 (fresher’s level)

The "fresher’s level" is the first level at which the students learn the basics of Archery with an entry-level bow. They learn to shoot at a distance of 6 to 12 meters. At this level they can participate in club level, school level and district level competitions and will be qualified to receive official medals and certificates by the district association.

They can also participate in the state level meets, will be qualified to receive medals but can’t receive state body certification, as level one is just a basic level.

It takes about 3 months of regular practice or 1200 arrows (which ever is earlier) to finish the first level and then move on to the second level.

At the end of the qualifying period, the Center Co-ordinator will recommend the Archers for the level 1 exams.

The The Archery Association of Tamilnadu (TAAT) will conduct the examination.

The exam will comprise of demonstration of skills acquired, general knowledge through viva voice, written exams and practical shooting with the bow and arrow at a distance of 6 to 12 meters.
